ATTEMPTED MURDER.
GORE, Oct. 8. A serious shooting affray occurred at Waipounaniu, near Rivcrsdale, last night at 'midnight. It appears that a mkldlo-agod bachelor living alone, named James Louttit, who entertained a grudge against two neighbours, brothers named ■ llorroll, visited the farm of the elder brother Edward Horrell. The first intimation of the presence of the visitor was n noise on ( side the bedroom windo w. The wirili was pushed up and a small quantity of scrim saturated with kerosene was thrown inside. Horrell jumped out of bed and was fired at from the window, the bullet, as far as can be
ascertained, glancing off his chest and lodging in his nock. Horrell rushed outside and made for his assailant. He ducked when a second shot was fired, and it also lodged in his neck. A third shot struck him near the groin, and a fourth missed him. By this time, Horrell closed with Louttit, and held him until assistance arrived. Information reached Gore at 2.15 a.m. and Constable Shnilfcr- was despatched at once and arrested Louttit on a charge of attempted 'murder. The revolver shooting was done with a livechambcred weapon, four chambers of whirh were discharged. Dr Watt, of Rivcrsdale, who was called in, does
not think HorrcTs condition serious. Louttit was brought before a Justice of the Peace at the Court this morning, and remanded for eight days for medical treatment. Accused seemed disinterested in the proceedings, and an application for bail was withdrawn ‘lt is said that for years Louttit has entertained a grudge against the Horrells which the neighbours predicted would culminate in trouble.
