SUMMER GAMES.

iOPIiNLNG DAY. This week has been chosen by several local recreation clubs to mark the opening of the forthcoming season. A more favourable day than Thursday could not have been desired tor this purpose. Victoria Park, now gay with its beautiful spring gifU, presented an animated appearance. 'J ho o\al was occupied with cricketers, the tennis and croquet courts had their devotees, while the bowling green was crowded with players and lady spectators. A number of people who take no active part in any of the foregoing pastimes also , found thenway to the Pari;, and the tidy grounds presented quite a gala appearance. CRICKET, There was a very good muster for the opeing of, the* Temuka Cricket Club's season. Teams were pickled by the captain and vice-captain, and an j enjoyable game was indulged in. The ground was found to be in fairly good order for playing, and all that is required is a little more rain. Soveral new members went to tho wickets, and It can bo foretold that, with a little practice, the club should bo able to put two creditable teams in the field. The cricketers are indebted to those ladies who supplied afternoon tea on the bowling green for their kindness in inviting them over to partake of the good things. Tho above club also opened its season on Thursday, under most favour-> able circumstances. The courts were in Pood order, and members and their friends had several enjoyable games. There was a good attendance, and the three courts were kept occupied all the afternoon. This is. we hope, a sure indication of the-fur-ther . prosperity of the club. Afternoon tea was provided by the lady (members, and greatly appreciated by all. ' After afternoon tea play was again resumed, and continued till after six o'clock. BOWLING. The day opened most auspiciously on the bowling green. There were a large number of players (who had anxiously awaited the' opening of the ' for the season) and lady and gentlemen visitors. The Geraldine Club were represented by Messrs Lechner and Darby, but owing to the Timaru Club opening the season on the same dav they were unable to send representatives. They, however, sent their good wishes. The green was j opened" without any formality, rinks being chosen by the Selection Committee. The green played well, players considering it in bettor condition than it had ever before been at tho commencement of the season. A very I pleasant afternoon was spent, players showing very good form, augunnc well for a successful season. A most delicious afternoon tea was provided for all bv Mesdames T. Buxton. \\. H. Brown. E. James, and H. Rug*:, which those who were fortunate enough to be present keenly appreciated. A number of young ladies and members of the club assisted indispensing it.
