The fish were most)./ .small, weighing fiom a pound to a pound and aGhalf, but one very nice one of Gibs was glassed. In connection with the Maori old age pensions mentioned in our last issue, our informant made an error as to how the pensions are computed. The reduction is not made in respect to acreage, but £1 is deducted in respect of every £lO in value da regards property upon which tho pensioner does not reside. The hardship in. the case of a niative is especially that his land is very scattered and often lie has to live on his least valu- ' able allotment and in this district the natives are but ill provided for.

Doubtless the twholosale slaughter of calves that lias taken place during the past two or three years has something to do with it. IVef is now fetching up to Jios audi 10s per lOlllb, instead of up to 2'm as formerly.

Nellignn, of the Railway Hotel, pleaded guilty to the iliel't of CM, and the charge sheet was altered in this particular. The evidence went to show tlnat while the I

barmaid was absent from the bar the money was taken from the cash register. The accused was taxed with the offence and denied it. Accused said in extenuation that he had been drinking. His Worship inflicted a lino of 20s, with £2 costs, and ordered the default a month's imprisonment.
