CRICKET.

TEMUKA v. TIMARU. Thursday was not the best of days for cricket; the weather was dull the light rather bad, and the wind bitterly cold, but nevertheless a very enjoyable game was,the out come of the, match between Tiruaru and Teniuka, at the Park, Teniuka. The home men went tp the wicket,, and with the exception of Minifie and Overton, came back again fairly promptly with anything but a creditable performance as a set off to their brief wielding of the willow. The two top scorers (Minifie and Overton) made 22 each, and when the former was caught there was a steady stream of players to and fro every few minutes, with the exception of Kallaugher (10 not out), who was in good form and played well. The total reached was 69. For Tiniaru Barron (16) played freely, while Williams, who never batted better, compiled 45, not out. Thanks to him, ably assisted by Wade, at a critical time, the visitors won handsomely by 32 runs and one wicket to spare. In bowling for Teniuka Cecil Brown (who I lately has been putting up some good performances with the leather) had the best average with two wickets for 8 runs, while Minifie (.4 for 27) and McCaskill (3 for 32) were not to be despised; For Timaru Moore (6 for 10) was very deadly, while Williams (3 for 23) did well, but was unlucky, frequently beating the batsman and the wicket also with too much break. The fielding on both sides was very fair, but the returns were, as a rule, slow and slovenly. fieldsmen seem to have an'Mea that as long as they have stopped the ball that it is all that is required. It is not so. Smart, quick returns not only keep the game alive, but aneck batsmen from making urns. -Appended are the scores : TEMUKA. Minifie, c Wright, b Moore 22 C. Brown, c Moore , b Barron ...
