Mr A. D. Aloore, so well known in athletic circles as a prominent member of ot the Waihi Football Club, left Winchester yesterday morning to take up an apppintment in Christchurch. Air Moore will be very much missed in connection with several public bodies, and his many friends unite m wishing him a long and prosperous career.

Application has been received by Captain Linn, secretary to the Royal Humane Society ot New Zealand, for recognition of the bravery of John William Blackwood, who on June 25th, at Dunedin, at a risk to himself, stopped a pair of runaway horses attached to a carriage, in which were seated the Premier, AlrsSeddon, and two of their daughters. At the Magistrate’s Court, Timaru, on Friday, Daniel Stewart, a tailor, was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for failing to comply with an order of the Court, made six years ago, ordering him to pay £1 a week towards the support of his wife and family. The arrears amounted to £lB5 15s. Accused said he had come to Timaru for a holiday, and he has got a long one. Timaru papers report the death of Mr John Hullen, until recently of Waitohi Flat, at the early age of 48 years. Deceased had followed farming pursuits for many years at Waitohi, and earned the respect of all who knew him. Until a comparatively short time ago he appeared a healthy, robust man, and it was only a mouth or six weeks ago that, finding his health broken, he went to live in Timaru. Airs Harris-Roberts, who is announced to hold a service in the Town Hall on Sunday evening after the ordinary church services, is self-styled a Universalist, holding no particular creed, but teaching spiritual science on its broadest lines, and self culture in particular. Her subject on Sunday will bo “ The Twentieth Century, its outlook and possibilities.” The service is to start at 8 o’clock, and Moody and Saukey’s hymns will be used. In our advertising columns the various auctioneers notify that the Pleasant Point Sale, 4th November; Temuka Sale, sth November ; Geraldine Farmers’ Sale, 6th November; Studholme Junction Sale, Bth November; and St. Andrews’ Sales, 15th November, will not he held. The sale at the upper Geraldine Yards will be held on Monday, 11th, instead of the following Wednesday, and the Washdyke Sale will be held on the 12th November. The next Sheep Skin Sale at Timaru will he held on the Gth.

A meeting of the committee of Winchester Alechanics’ Institute was held on Thursday evening. There were present —A. 11. Crosbie (chairman), J Opie, S. J. Hitchens, W. Harrison, j. Moore, and G. Steven. The chairman reported that the improvements authorised at last meeting had been carried out very satisfactorily by Messrs Haar and A. D. Aloore. The treasurer reported a credit balance of £6 11s 6d. The chairman'was requested to make enquiries as to the title deeds of the Institute the first time ho visits Timaru, A large parcel of new books was received from Christchurch, and 31 new books were chosen. Accounts amounting to £5 were passed for payment and the committee rose.

The opera went very freely from start to finish, all engaged appearing quite at their ease. Mr Jeffries took an opportunity at the entr’acte of thanking the children for their attendance, and expressed the pleasure he felt at the way in which they had gone through their marches. Those who witnessed their performance had, he was satisfed been well pleased also.
