Temuka Rifles. —The Temuka Rifles held a Government inspection parade on Wednesday evening, the inspecting officer being Colonel Bailey. Captain Richardson, Lieutenants Whitehead and Feilden, Sergt - Major Jones, and a large number of men were in attendance. After being exercised by the non-commissioned officers the men were inspected by Colonel Bailey, who stated that he was extremely pleased with the large muster, aud also with the order in which tho uniforms and accoutrements were kept. The company were then put through some useful attack drill by Sergeant-Major Jones, who was highly pleased at the manner in which the men acquitted themselves. After parade a meeting of the shooting committee was held, when the final arrangements in connection with the company's annual prize-firing, which takes place on November 9th, were made. Tho company will probably hold their local camp in January.

Alexander Forsyth, a single man, aged 45 years, was thrown from his horse at Hedgehope, Southland, on Monday morning and killed, his neck being- broken. It appears that he was breaking in a young animal and the saddle girth parted. On Monday George Tottenham, aged 21 years, was fishing at the east training; wall in the Buller river, when a big stone on which he was standing gave way. He was caught by the stone and pined down in the water. An attempt to move the stone failed until a diver went down and fastened a chain to it, when the body was recovered.

At Timaru on Tuesday, John Burke O'Brien was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for habitual drunkenness. Frank Daily an American sailor, was fined 10s for drunkenness and resisting the police. A lad charged with stealing a watch was remanded until Friday.
