Charge Against a Lawyer.

Wellington, July 6. In the Supreme Court yesterday the second hearing of the charge against W. Nichol Cathro, solicitor, of having misappropriated £IOB4 Is 10d, belonging to Mr J. Prior, solicitor, of Feildieg, in which a former jury disagreed, was again gone into. Mr Gray, who appeared for the Crown, said that the Crown was now in a position to absolutely disprove accused’s story that he had been robbed of the money in Wellington on Saturday night. Two witnesses swore to seeing Cathro in Palmerston North on that Saturday night. Mr Justice Denniston in summoning up, said that the only way in which - accused had attempted to account for the loss of the money was by what had practically been admitted to be a deliberate lie and perjury. The jury returned to Court at 8.30 p.m. The foreman announced that they were unable to agree. Mr Justice Denniston accordingly discharged the jury. The Crown Prosecutor applied for a new trial with a fresh panel, but the question was held over for consideration till the 17th iust.
