Sydney, Sept. 8. News from Hong Kong states that on July "29th a typhoon occurred. Fiftythree" people were killed and immense damage done to property aud shipping. The repression of the Formosan rebellion is having a disastrous effect on the island. The flourishing towns of Chipchip and Hoonim are completely deserted, people having fled to the hills for safety. It is estimated that forty thousand Chinese were driven from their homes. They are camped in the open. Half of them are utterly destitute. Four hundred of the Japanese army attacked the brigand chief's stronghold, but had to retreat with the loss of 200 killed.
