At the Supreme Court, Wellington, on Monday, Charles Smith, a Scandinavian, got 12 months’ hard labour for maiming a horse. Albert Thomas pleaded guilty to a murderous assault on Mr Kirkbride, formerly proprietor of the Evening Press. A doctor’s certificate was handed in showing the prisoner to be of weak intellect. On Tuesday James Catt (23) got 3 years for horse stealing. Ho said ho was driven to crime through want of employment and inability to maintain his wife, who was sick, and his children. A man named Laroche, who was with him, was charged with aiding and abetting. The jury found that he was an accessory after the fact, but his Honour had to take this as a verdict of not guilty. On Tuesday William Fogerty, 14, pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter of James Fiddis, another schoolboy, and was sentenced to one hour’s imprisonment. Richard Green, 15 years of age, was convicted of horse-stealing, and was ordered to come up for sentence when called ou. Patrick Bleach, charged with stealing seven sheep at Eweburn, was acquitted on two charges.
