DISASTER AT SANDGATE.
London, March 6. T»« &"* age at Sandgate was due to B " through rains, and was not the result of an earthquake, as was at first supposed. A large part of the town is gradually slipping towards the sea, and this is attributed to explosions in connection with the removal of the remains of the ship Benvenue, which was wrecked about 300 yards off the shore in November 1891. Five hundred houses were damaged and fifty families rendered homeless. Half the rateable value of Sandgate was destroyed by the slip.
