THE CANADIAN SCANDALS.
Ottawa, September 13. The . majority of the Committee of Enquiry find the charges against M’Greevy proved, and those against Sir H. Langevin not proved. The minority are of opinion that the latter was guilty of a breach of public trust. The Premier, Mr Abbott, and Lord Stanley, GovernorGeneral, are conferring as to the conduct of the .Quebec Government. The committee condemn the practice of taxing Government officials to obtain money for party purposes. In the Baie-Chaleures scandal it was proved 175,000d01s had been improperly used. Mr Mercier’s * share of this amount was 55,000d015. Lieutenant-Governor Boyer, of Quebec, has resigned, but Mr Mercier has refused to accept the verdict of the Committee. Sept. 14.
The Governor of Quebec demands that a Royal Commission should be appointed to fully investigate the charges in connection with the Baie-Chaleures railway. The Hon. H. Mercier, the Premier, opposes the proposal, and a crisis is likely to result.
