CONCERT AT TEMUKA.

On Thursday evening a concert was given in the Yolunteer Hall, Temuka, the proceeds of which were destined to augment the prize fund of the District High School. The majority of the performers were pupils of Mr Sidney Wolf, who very kindly organised and, conducted the concert, There was a fair attendance, but not such as might have been anticipated in view of the superior' programme provided. The first part commenced with an instrumental selection from “ Norma,” played by Miss Kennedy (harmonium) and Mr Sidney Wolf (piano). This was a really delightful item excellently played. Mr Foster’s song “Rank and File” secured him a well-deserved round of applause. Mrs tiidney Wolf followed with a most artistic rendering of “ The Lost Chord.” This, without doubt, although not encored, was the gem of the evening, and had the concert ended then the audience could hardly fail to have been satisfied. The dual accompaniment, piano and harmonium, added to the effect of this poetic song. Mr Ghis Jones introduced a new element in “The Frenchman,” a lively and amusing comic song. Miss A. Mee succeeded in pleasing the audience with Mattel’s charming song “ Dear Heart,” after which Mr T, J ones—new to Temuka audiences as a singer —gave a spirited rendering of “ Let Me Like a Soldier Fall,” to the martial accompaniment of which Mr Wolf did fall justice. Mrs Hayhurst was set down upon the programme for “Tidings,” but owing to recent domestic affliction she was debarred from singing, and Dr Reid very kindly filled her place, the so«g selected being “ Life and Death,” which was applauded. Miss Warrington, and Mr Holdgato had to respond to an imperative encore for their duet ‘“When the Wind Blows in from the Sea,” and repeated the last verse. In the second part Mias Warrington was very successful in her rendition of a quaint song, “The Quaker’s Daughter.” Miss Kennedy’s pianoforte solo “ Folka de la Reine ” was spiritedly played, and well received. Mr J. W. Holdgate’s powerful voice was heard to advantage in “ The Pilot’s Daughter,” and both he and Miss Mee, who followed, received a very hearty encore. Mr R. Foster was again recalled for the next item, “ Will o’ the Wisp,” which he gave in splendid manner, and substituted “ The Scout.” Dr Reid sang “Afloat” with much spirit, and the taking music seemed to please the audience highly, Mr T. Jones again selected operatic music, and gave a careful and feeling rendering of “ There is a Flower that Bloometh.” He was recalled to repeat the last verse. Mrs Sidney Wolf sang with much feeling “ By the River ’’—one of Mr Wolf’s compositions. This was another choice selection which hardly received the applause it deserved. Mr Ghis Jones again made a hit with his comic song “An Awful Little Scrub,” and was encored. This concluded a choice programme, each item of which served to show that the performers were possessed of more than ordinary taste and musical skill. At the close of the concert Mr K. F. G-ray, as Chairman of the School Committee, tendered a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Wolf and the ladies and gentlemen accompanying him, and to r the audience for their attendance.
