The Wellington Evening Post is offering thirty guineas in prizes for jubilee poems. The steamer Chang Chow, which loaves Wellington for Hong Kong today, takes 2100 tons of Westport coal and 28 Chinese passengers. Evan Lloyd, night watchman, Nelson, was found early on Saturday morning hanging from the Manuka street bridge. No reason has been assigned for the deed. Trump Card, the well-known stud horse, has been sold to Mr W. Brown, of Waikouaiti, the price being about 150 guineas.

The barque William McLaren, from Newcastle with a cargo of coal, was wrecked at the Wellington heads on Saturday evening. The vessel left Newcastle on the 28th September, in charge of Captain Salmon, who is also owner, and after a rapid passage of 7 days arrived, off the heads. On Saturday morning Captain Salmon at once commenced to beat into the, harbor,, and after passing the Narrows the vessel grounded slightly. She commenced to make water immediately, and about half an hour afterwards foundered almost abreast of the pilot station. The barque was valued at £2500, and neither it nor the cargo of 756 tons of coal atp insured. It is probable that the vessel and cargo may be saved if the weather keeps fine. At a meeting of the creditors of J. E. Scott, a Gisborne bankrupt. On the bankrupt being questioned about the football venture said that it was ; a dead loss. The creditors desired to obtain the books of the football team, but the bankrupt says there were none kept, and if so they are not in the colony. Mrs Scott left just about the time of the bankruptcy, taking seventeen trunks of goods, and it is found that articles . such as new

cruet stands and new linen are missing from the hotel, The assignee was instructed to get back all the property of the estate if possible, also to take from the bankrupt his gold watch, and in the meantime the bankrupt be allowed to go to Auckland to endeavour to raise money to make an bffe? of a dividend.
