SOCIAL GATHERING, TEMUKA.

a tea and social gathering in connection with St. ;Satiour’s Church, Temuka, took place in the Oddfellows Hall, Temuka, on Thursday evening. There was a capital attendance, both of adherents of the church and other denominations; , The tables, which . were amply supplied with refreshments of the best, were presided over : by Mesdames John and J. T. M. Hay- ~ hurst, Austin, Dunford, and the Misses Eowe, Timson (2), Fenton, Heville, and Sweet. The Mesdames Hayhurst each provided a table, and the others were the gift of the bachelors. After tea, which was barely concluded by 8 o’clock, songs and instrumental selections were. given by Mrs S. T. M. Hayhurst, the Misses Foster, Sweet, Timson, A. Lee, E, Pilbrow, F. Guy, the Eev. T. A. Hamilton, and Messrs E. P. Aspinall, and Langridge. The latter appeared in darkey costume. MF C- Horseman contributed two recitations, and Mrs Hayhurst (piano), and Messrs Andrews (clarionet) and Langridge (violin) played an instrumental trio, “ My Queen.” The Eev. T. A. Hamilton, who occupied the chair, after an overture played by Mrs

Hayburst, said that the object of the gathering was to provide the means of enjoyment for young people under the protection of the Church. It had been felt that there was a great want of sociality and mutual intercourse, and it was thought advisable to arrange entertainments and so forth whereby all might be brought into close and friendly intercourse, and the young members might be shielded from the temptation of seeking their amusements from questionable sources, i The funds accruing would be kept towards the promotion ®f similar gatherings, the next of which would take place about the Bth August. Ihe thanks of all were duo to Mrs Hayburst, senr., who had interested herself greatly in the movement, and to all who had assisted to contribute towards thq tea. He also desired to thank the committee of the Wesleyan Church for the loan of seats. I heir kindness in this particular was highly appreciated. At the next gathering he felt confident that there would be a liberal response made to any appeal for aid in providing the toa from the hearty appreciation that all seemed to have had of that provided that evening! After the concert, which Concluded with “ God Save the Queen,” the chairman stated that coffee and refreshments would bo served round, and as many of the yuonger people desired to amuse themselves with dancing an opportunity would then be afforded them of doing so. He thought that under certain circumstances there was no harm in such recreation, and provided it were carried out iu moderation he should put no stumbling block in jibe way. The majority of those present having partaken of refreshments stayed for an hour or so, and thej remainder of the evening was spent agreeably, music being provided by 'volunteers. The gathering must be considered one of the most successful that has yet taken place, and doubtless future efforts in the same direction will be appreciated.
