MELBOURNE EXHIBITION.

Melbourne, Augusts. Sir WV Jervois, who left for New Zetland in the 8.8. Manapouri to day, was accompanied aboard the steamer by Sir James Hector, the New Zealand Commissioner at the Exhibition, and a number of prominent New Zealanders now visiting Melbourne, and was entertained at luncheon aboard the steamer ty Sir James Hector, who, in proposing the health of His Excellency, said he desired, on behalf of the colony, to express thanks to His Excellency for the great interest he had taken in tbe Exhibition. The success of the New Zealand Court was almost entirely due to tbe lively persona! interest shown in the work by His Excellency. In returning thanks, His Excolloncy said the New Zealand Court held an admirable position among too other colonies, and the colony was much indebted to Sir J. Hector, the New Zealand Commissioner, for the admirable manner in which the arrangement of the Court bad been carriod out, and for th" careful attention paid to detai's. This afternoon a meeting of the Ni-w Zealand Exhibition Commissioners and oihers w»b held to consider the adverse criticisms by the New Zealand Hrrald special correspondent on tho mineral »xInbits which had appeared in the Argus this morning in a cable message from New Zealand. Seventy gentlemen w« re present, Mr Louisson (Mayor of Christohurcb) in the chair, After discussion a resolution was passel expressing satisfaction with all the arrangements, and affirming that the criticis-m of the Herald correspondent was premature, The meeting was called together independently of any suggestion from Sir James Hector. Sir Jas. Hector telegraphs :—" Report emanated from a speculator bere (Melbourne). Minerals not yet fully displayed ; will have complete representation ; general opinion very favorable." The Mayor of Auckland confirms the report as to Hie meagre display of minerals in the N.Z. Court at the Me- - Exhibition, and mine managers in Auckland are being urged to send quartz specimens from their mines to the Exhibition. Tbe Collector of Customs has been directed to permit the export of goid ores to the Melbourne Exhibition on the guarantee of the exporter to reimport or pay duty.
