TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

I The monthly meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs H. M. Miles (Chairman), E. Brown, Bussell, Surridge, and Davis. MINUTES. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Outward correspondence was read and approved. Inward was read as fol Brom the S.O. Board of Education, stating that Miss Bowe’s resignation had been accepted, and that the matter of supplying a successor would be brought before the neit meetmg of the Board; also stating that Mr J. Kalaugher had been appointed locum tenens until the post rendered vacant by Miss Bowe’s resignation is permanently filled. , , , Prom the same, stating that the annual meeting of householders for the election of a now Committee would be held on Monday, 23rd mst., at 1 p.m. M-4.STEE’B REPORT, The Head Master’s report for the month was read as follows (i g IB _I Lave the honor to submit the following report for the month ending 31st March Average weekly rolh Boys 185, girls 165, total 350 strict average attendance: Boys ! girls 124.8, total 272 5 attendance: Boys 162, girls 140, total 302. Our average for the quarter ended 31st March was 279.8. The worst, attendance we had during the quarter was that of the week preceding the vacation, when, on account ot the T weather, it dropped to an average of 229.5. Bor the three weeks previous the average had been 284.8. Itisa matter of regret, too, that so few take advantage of the instruction m secondary subjects. ■ At present four are reading Latin, French, Euclid, and Algebra; seven are reading Latin, Euclid, and Algebra; one is reading Latin and Euclid; and two are reading Euclid and Algebra, or only fourteen in all, while the roll number of our sth, 6th, and 7th Standards is 55. It would take just the same amount of time to impart the necessary instruction to twice as many as at present aspire to do a little more than is absolutely necessary to pass the Standards. Accounts to the amount of *4 10s were passed for payment, visitor’s report. ■ The Chairman reported that he had visited the school during the first week after the Easter holidays, and found everything working satisfactorily. Mr Kalaugher, who had been sent by the Board as locum tenens in > the room of Miss Eowe, resigned, was at his post, and the Head Master spoke very highly of the work done by him. He found that the gale which prevailed throughout the district had damaged the roof and blown out a pane of glass in the schoolroom, lie had had the necessary repairs effected as they were urgent. The janitor also drew his attention to the rotten state of some of the closet pans, and he had found it necessary to purchase four new ones. Want of funds had prevented him having the alteration i made to the desks for the ink wells, as suggested by the visitor to the school for the preceding month. The action of the Chairman was approved. THI LITE CONCERT. The Secretary stated that the late concert had netted £4 2s fid. SPECIAL MEETING. Mr Bussell moved—“ That the Committee meet at a quarter to seven o’clock on Monday evening next tor the purpose of confirming the minutes of the present meeting.” The motion was seconded by Mr Davis, and carried. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report was read and considered, and on the motion of Mr Bussell was adopted. CONCLUSION. The Chairman briefly thanked the members for the assistance they had given him in carrying out his duties as Chairman, and said it had given him great pleasure to preside at the meetings of the Committee. Messrs Bussell and Davis made a few remarks, testifying to the able manner in which the Chairman had presided, and the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks.
