Beresford has been scratched for the Dunedin Cup. The licensing elections at Auckland on Thursday ■ all resulted in favor of the temnerance candidates by large majorities. The Ponsonby Committee is pledged to prohibition, and will withdraw the licenses held by two hotels in the district. At the Waipa county district, where the brewers’ candidates made a strong fight, the prohibitionists were all elected. An amended plan for the electric lighting of the City was submitted to. the Auckland City Council on Thursday night by Mr J. C. Firth. The present lighting of the City is about 5000 candle power. The system proposed gives 64,000 candle power. There will be twelve times the illuminating power at an increase of ten per cent in cost. It has transpired that a registered letter mail bag by the lonic has been tampered with. The postal authorities are investigating the matter. A five roomed house at Roalyn, Dunedin owned and occupied by Margin Lyons, has been burnt down through the upsetting of a kerosene lamp. Insurance, £4OO in the Manchester office. The boiling-down place belonging to Walter Perry, butcher, Musterton. was burned down on Wednesday morning. There was no insurance and the loss is about £350.
