NEWS FROM THE ISLANDS.
Auckland, Feb. 37.
The s. s, Eiehmond arrived from the Islands to-day. Among the passengers are the Eey. Shirley Baker, Premier of Tonga and family, the Eev. Cooper, English Missionary from Eaiatea, and Menel, German Consul at Tahiti.
A hurricane raged at Earatonga on the 22nd to 26th January. Much damage was done, and 70 or 80 houses were blown down. The schooner Atlantic, belonging to Donald and Edenbaw, was driven on a reef and became a total wreck. No lives were lost.
The vice-king of Eaiatea with a number of chiefs visited Tahiti on the 24th January with a request for annexation to Prance. The General Assemby ratified the request. The Governor of Tahiti received the deputation cordially, and promised to send their request to the Prench Government. The depuation visited the Admiral on the Dunquesne, and received a salute of twenty-one guns.
A carter named Daniel Sullivan was killed near Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, on Thursday last, a wheel of hia dray passing over hia head. The Calliope dock, Auckland, was opened on Thursday last, H.M.S. Calliope and Diamond being airaultaneoualy docked. Thousands of persons assembled to witness the ceremony.
