THE LONDON UNEMPLOYED.
London, Oct. 18. The unemployed agitation was renewed this morning, when an attempt was made to hold a meeting in Trafalgar Square, but the police, who bad been mastered in strong force, prevented the proposed meeting being held, and in keeping (he square clear a great amount of scuffling took place. About 2000 persons proceeded to Hyde Park, where several speeches wers delivered. A move was afterwards made in the direction of Bayswater, but on the crowd reaching the Victoria Uale a conflict ensued, owing to the police barring Iheir progress. The mob destroyed the iron hurdles and seats in the Park, and, with weapons thus improvised, attacked the police, injuring a number of constables. The police were reinforced to a considerable extent, and succeeded ultimately in dispersing the assemblage, several arrests being made. Later. The unemployed .demonstration in Trafalgar Square included among its ranks a large proportion of roughs, who were armed with bar*, slicks, end meatchoppers. Some threatened to bring revolvers. Several of the speakers claimed that an Eight Hours Bill should be introduced, snd that the Thames Embankment should be extended in order to provide for the election of artisan’s dwellings. They also declared that the distinction in classes was fast provoking « bloody revolution. _ Those charged with obstructing the police were , severely dealt with.
Oct. 19. Fresh demonstrations of the unemployed took place in Hyde Park to-day, after which the crowd proceeded through and then on to the Thames Embankment, where they were met by a force of mounted and foot police, who charged and dispersed the mob, A number of foreigners, chiefly anarchists, were noticed taking a prominent part in the demonstration.
