Political News,— I The Wellington correspondent of the Ashburton Guardian telegraphed yesterday :— 11 The financial statement has been well received and is generally satisfactory to the Ministerial supporters. The protective tendencies of the new tariff will, however, lead to a determined struggle on the part, of ‘.he Freetraders, and may not improbably result in tbo tariff being rejected. In that event there will be an appeal to the country, and a general election may be pre.cipitated within a few weeks. It ia high time therefore that those who wish to have a say in the matter should see to it that their names are on the electoral rolls.”

Fatal Accident. —We regret 10 have to record another fatal accident. It appears that on last Tuesday evening, at between 7 and 8 o’clock, Mr J. J. O’Connor, of the Levels Plains, left Temuka in a cart, on which there were some bags of chuff, for a contract at road making which he had near Mr Hayhurat’a new mill. There is nothing further known of how he came by his death, but judging from what happened he appears to have mistaken tka footbridge by the Presbvl eriauManse for t he Oxford bridge, and gone astray, us his track was along the river up to where he was found. He appears to have crossed the river all right and gone up along the bank till he came to a fence which run close to the river and which stopped him. He then apparently turned round, and in coming along a sidling the cart was overturned into the river just opposite Mr J. Davis's house. He was found next morning by a daughter of Mr Davis’s with his head sunk in three or four inches of water. On lop of his head were some bugs of chaff, and he was pinned across the small of his back by the front of the cart. The horse was lying on its side with its head out of the water, and had sustained no serious injury. Further particulars will be gathered from the report of the inquest. The Secretary, Mr Dyson, wrote to say that he was unable to attend, and Mr Tworney acted as Secretary pro tem. At the request of Mr Lawson Mr G, Lcvens’ name was added to the Committee. A letter was read from Mr Rayner, suggesting that the subscription lists should show four columns : one for a cottage home, one for the mechanics’ institute, one for the obelisk, and one for celebration expenses, so as to give subscribers the opportunity of saying which object they felt inclined to support. It was decided that it was desirable !o put some definite scheme before the public meeting, and that to put so many schemes would only lend to confusion. Mr Lawson suggested that the Park should be named Victoria Park.—Agresd to. Mr Hargreaves suggested to add a display of fireworks to the programme already agreed to. This was also agreed to. On the motion of Mr Findlay, seconded by Mr Rutland, the following programme was adopted for submission to the public meeting, viz,; Procession, obelisk, planting an oak, naming the park “Victoria Park,” children’s sports, fireworks, and entertainment.
