S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The monthly meeting of the Board was held on Thurnday. Present—Messrs S. W. Goldsmith (Chairman), J. Jackson, R. A. Barker, W. Howell, and Revs. Geo. Banlnyand T. Jasper Smythe. The Chairman reported the following resignations :—Mr Hamilton, of Albury ; Mr F. Betbune, Pleasant Valley; Mr Erskine, Geraldine ; Miss Bertha Brown, Rangitira Valley; Jefcoate, Pareora. Mr B. Barclay had declined the appointment of sesond master at Waimate. Miss Cooper had been appointed temporary teacher at Pareora, and Mrs Schmidt, sewing mistress »t Washdyko. ' Government correspondence was read, viz., a voucher for £316 JOs sd, extra building grant in addition to £1843, the grant originally allocated to this Board. The Architect's report was received. The Rev. T. Jasper Smythe stated that tho new school building at Totara Valley was bein*; erected partly on pi iyate ground. He thought this ought to be known at oaoe.—Mr Howell reported that he hid stopped the arork.—The matter was discussed, and later on it wa« considered in Committee, when it was decided what should be done, the'Architect to be at the cost of any necessary conveyancing.

A list of the teachers who were present at the last examination was read. One of th< m, Mr A. Erskine, was leaving the service. The Board considered the cases of ihose who had failed, and it was reBolved—"That the persons who failed at the last examination to obtain certificates be requested to at once submit to the Boird any explanation re their failure which they might be able to give, and tho office request from the Department the results of the examination in the case of tho person« referred to." Notifications were received of the election of various School Committees. In reference to the proposed school at Arundel (Upp«:r Rangitata), the Board considered the probabilities as to attendance aod the expediency of erecting a building. As it appeared that no freeholders were offering sites, the Rev. G. Barclay suggested that a portable school should be constructed, tie moved—- " That before the Board commit itself to a new school building at Arundel, the residents in the neighborhood be asked to procure a site, and also that the Architect be consulted as to the possibility of devising some movable building, which, if not wanted in one place, might he shifted to another." This was carried. Reports by the Inspector were read and discussed, and ordered to be transmitted to the Committees interested. Various alterations, repairs, etc., were authorised. The Committee re salaries to teacher?, etc., recommended :—(1) that in the bonus system no change be made at present ; (2) that taking into consideration the small number of sites (some four or five) having an area of more than a few acres, from ooe to five, and also the fact that of th 6 few large aiteß two are already let, the Board receiving the rents, the Committee have no recommendation to make that would disturb existing arrangements ; (3) that with regard to the recasting of the scale of salaries as a whole, or to change in any particular cases this Committee regret they do not see their way from a financiel point of view to recommend any higher rate of remuneration than at present.—The report wus adopted. Be the South Rangitata School it was resolved "That Messrs McLeod, Naughton and Waller be appointed commissioners to manage the South Rangitata School."

A letter was read from tyhe Auckland, Board conveying a resolution that it was desirable that uniform rending books should be used in Public Schools throughout the Colony.—The Board coincided with the suggestion. The Waimate Committee were granted £4 for a woodshed ; £8 to be spent. The Geraldine jl'lat Committee were granted £5 'or renewal of furniture, on condition that #lO be sp9nt. The same Committee notified their approval of the cumulative voting system. The Rangitata Committee were granted an amount for oertain repairs and alterations. The Milford Committee asked to be allowed to appoint a pupil, Master McLeod,-as third year pupil teacher.— As he had not undergone any examination the request could not be acpeded to. The Rev, Mr Smythe spoke on the bad construction of the Milford School building, which was erected by the N.C. Board of Education, A petition from residents of Rhubarb Flat for the establishment of a school was re td and the Ir spector requested to report. The Kakahu Bush Committee were granted £ll for clearing, etc, on condition that £22 be spent. The Rev. Mr Barchy reported that Mr Wipley had made over the site of the school. The Timaru Committee were granted £5 for certiin work and the meeting terminated.
