Sailed, this morning—Union Company’s steamer Wairarapa, for the Bluff, Poppens, the absconding hotelkeeper from Wellington, who was released on bail last Friday, has been re-arrested at the instance of his surety, who suspected Poppens intended to make his escape. Sydney, August 18. An immense concourse of people witnessed the boat race on Saturday, no less than 68 steamers being crowded with spectators. Great enthusiasm was displayed here over Beach’s victory. After the race a most cordial interview took place between Beach and Hanlan. The latter admitted he was beaten, but said he was paralysed by the close proximity of steamer Tomki, which unfortunately bore down too close to his boat. A large meeting took place at Punch’s Hotel to-day, when the stakes in the sculling match were paid over. Hanlan admitted that he had wilfully fouled Beach,' because he believed that the latter had crossed over into his water. Hanlan expressed a desire to row another match with Beach within three months, but Beach positively refused to meet the ex-champion within six months. Clifford also offered to row Hanlan, but the latter refused to take up the challenge.
