GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Tuesday last in the office, Geraldine. Present —Messrs Flatman, Deßenzy, R. H. Postlethwaite, and Kelland. ' '' _ In the absence of Mr Slack, Chairman of the Board, Mr Flatman took the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting were passed as read. TENDERS. Tetheredge, £9 10s (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr Dierck, offering bluestone spalls at a certain price.—The Overseer was requested to inform Mr Dierck that" tenders will be called when metal is required. From Mr J. D. Jones, Winchester, stating that the overhanging willow branches at the ford between Mr J. Lewis’s and his land had not been cut away yet, and he hoped it would be done before the spring.—The Overseer to inform Mr Jones that notice bad been given to Mr Lewis in regard to the willow branches overhanging the road, but the Board could not interfere with those in the river. From Mr E. P. Sealey, complaining that owing to stones having been 'thrown against bis fence irr the road he could not eradicate the gorse on his frontage to the road. He suggested that the stones should be broken and used on the road. — It was decided that the large stones on the western boundary of Mr Sealey’e land be broken.

From Mr T. H. Taylor and other payers, urging the necessity of a road,'and having the terraces eased, to the Rangitata from Mr Taylor’s section.—To stand over to see if Government will make a siding. From Mr E. Hobson, Hilton, stating that part of the road in Beautiful Valley from the end of metalled road to the boundary line was unfit for traffic. He ' would ask to have the same repaired.—lt was decided not to do so at present owing to froets and wet weather. ■ From Mr Wilfred Badger, re subscription- for hia..forthcoming work on the New Zealand statutes. * of the Bank of New Zealand, Geraldine, enclosing deposit receipt for £5700: ~ * From Mr Cook, Orarf Flat, complain* j ing that stones heaped on his side of the road prevented him from eradicating the gorse.—The Overseer to write to Mr Cook, and state that if the stones were gathered by adjoining owners, the Board would pay half according to Oversesr’a estimate. From Mr E. Pleasant and others, asking that Pya's Road on the Geraldine Downs be widened and shingled, and asking thattbe Board would give notice to owners of properties adjoining the road to clear the gorse away.—The Overseer ♦o report on the road and to give notice as requested re gorse. From the Manager of the Bank of New South -Wales, Geraldine, enclosing Bank deposit receipt for sums deposited by the Board. • •, ... From Mr C. ; R. Shaw, enclosing his account for certain-plans supplied to the Board, and fpr surveying. From Mr j. Lovc, asking the Board to gravel the remainder of the road across the downs from his house to Mr Wells’s gateway.—The matter to stand over till next Board day; ‘ IN COMMITTEE. The Board then went into Committee to arrange for receiving deputation, after adjournment, from the Town Board. DEPUTATIONS. Mr J. Lewis waited on the Board in reference.to a drain he required to be made on a road near his property.—The Overseer was instructed to report on same. Messrs Pearpoint,, Maslio and Dun4pp waited bn the Board for the purposer of coming to some arrangement as to the amount due from the Geraldine Road Board to the Geraldine Town Board. Mr C. E- Sberratt, Clerk to the latter, was also present. ‘‘ Mr Pearpoint said no doubt the Board were aware why (he deputation waited on tham that day, viz., to come to some arrangement as to the amount due to the fown Board.’ In response to a letter <pa the-subject L» had written to Mr Gray, Chairman of the Temuka Town Board, he had received a reply giving the basis on which the Town Board at Temuka and the Temuka Road Board had arrived at a decision, which he; would hand in for the Board to read. ' The letter was -then read by the Chairman, ■ , ’ ! Mr Pearpoint said thattbe Town Board waa willing to come to an arrangement on a similar basis, viz., that of the rateable value of property; The Chairman remarked that the Board would like to take time to consider as to what basis to.go. on. Mr Postleth waita-asked Mr Pearpoint if the Town Board-conld give some Idea as to the amount it expected to receive I Mr Pearpomc said that it was very hard to say, as it would entirely depend on what basis they went. , Mr Pearpoint, drew the Chairfflan’s attention to that part of the Act beaming on the subject/ In reply to Mr Postlethwaite, Mr Pearpoint said that it would suit the deputation to meet the Gera Idine Road Board in a fortnight’s time; It was then agreed; that the meeting should take place on Tuesday, 26th Inst., at 2 p.m. ‘ The deputation then withdrew. Messrs J. Pye and =F. Dierck had an interview with the Board in reference to the road from the Government Bush to Gardiner’*. ’ They asked the reconsider their decision arrived at during last Board day.’ Mr spoke in regard to the bad conditiod' of the road. After (nature consideration the Board decided that-the Overseer should report thereon. - ■ . ; ; Mr Jasi Bray bad an interview with the Board, asfcing'that about ten chains of the road from Gapes’s to the foot of the hill to his place* might bo shingled. In reference to the matter complained of by the oveneer re the contractor on the Woodbury road, ’ the Board decided that the stones should be put on the road and broken. The Board considered that the arrangements made by the Overseer re the ford complained of previously by Mr Wigley were satisfactory. The Board approved of the Overseer deferring to order the timber for the Geraldine traffic bridge. , In regard to the balance stated to be due by the County Council, on account of birds and eggs destroyed, the Overseer was directed to apply for same. In reference to the matter tc ford at Holwell, it was decided to let the matter stand over. The action taken by the Overseer in regard to the employment of unemployed at stonebreaking was approved of by the Board. ' INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES REPORT. SIR,—I have to state that since my last report (Bth July) fourteen births have been registered in this district, while during the same period only one death has occurred, that of a female infant aged six months, resident at Ashfield, from ulcerative stomatitis. The only matter to which my attention has been_ directed was the case of a dead horse which had been buried at Woodbury. This was stated to have been insufficiently done and X, in company with Constable Willough y, inspected the place and saw the person who had buried the horae and we instructed him to so complete the work as to prevent a nuisance arising. Since that I have heard nothing further on the subject. lam not aware whether any amount of sickness is prevalent in the district. —I am, etc., “ W. C.
