ATTACKED WITH JAVELIN
INSPECTOR OF TRAFFIC SERIOUS INJURY JUST ESCAPED. CYCLIST RIDING WITHOUT LIGHT. ■ N CONSIDERABLE FORCE EMPLOYED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Dec. 23. Struck by a javelin wielded by a cyclist whom he told to stop because he had no light, a New Brighton traffic inspector, Mr. F. Blewitt, had a narrow escape from serious injury late on Saturday night. . Mr. Blewitt saw the cyclist approaching and ordered him to stop. As the cyclist drew level with the inspector he raised his javelin to tfie extent of his arm and brought it down with considerable force. ' Taken by surprise, the inspector just managed to grasp the javelin and avoid being struck on the head or shoulder. The cyclist carried on and the inspector was able to wrench the javelin from his grip. At the wrench the cyclist wobbled badly, but did not lose control of his machine. The inspector could not give chase. There was no one about, and although a car was stopped by the inspector a few minutes later it was hopeless to. attempt to chase the cyclist. “There is no doubt that he meant to strike me,” said Mr. Blewitt. “When I examined the javelin afterwards I realised what a nasty injury it could have inflicted if it had hit me in the face or body.”
