IMPRESSIVE TRIBUTE

FUNERAL OF MR. EDWARD LONG. LOCAL BODIES PAY RESPECTS. No more impressive tribute to one who had played such a large part in South Taranaki public affairs could have been paid than the attendance of those occupying prominent positions at the funeral of Mr. Edward Long at Manaia yesterday. A procession of between 120 and 130 cars followed the cortege to pay last respects at the cemetery. Requiem mass was celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church at 9 a.m. and the funeral service was taken by the Rev. Father P. Bree who was assisted by the Rev. Fathers Barr-Brown, Harnett and L. Evett. A FRIEND’S APPRECIATION. (Contributed.) It has been said that one can nearly always tell by a man’s handshake and his method of greeting much of the character of that man. If that is so, then there was no doubt of the character and the personality of Mr. Edward Long, Manaia, who died on Sunday. He was a real man in every respect, a man of whom his word was his bond and one to know whom was a privilege. His death is to the writer the termination of a close friendship lasting over many years during which he had the opportunity of seeing him in his home and meeting him in public life in several of many spheres of work to which he devoted his time, his energy and his ability. One always knew where Mr. Long stood but, though he had very decided opinions which he was always able to uphold by his power of insight into the problems of the world and his wide experience, he was always most kindly and charitable in his judgments and was possessed of the somewhat rare gift of being able to see the other man’s point of view. He was the same generous-minded manly man in public as in private life. During a long period of years he freely devoted his enthusiasm and ability to the service of his district, by which others in many walks of life were helped. The world is undoubtedly the poorer for the passing of such a great man. His memory will live long with those who knew him best.
