Mr. C. N. Thayer, town clerk of Opunake, is spending the holidays at New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Hardy will leave New Plymouth on Thursday morning en route to Sydney, where they intend to make their home. The death of the Rev. G. L. Rayner, Adelaide, at the age of 79, is reported by cable. He was chairman of the Congregational Union of Australia. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. Hughson, senr., Rahotu, have returned from an extended trip to Great Britain. They are staying at Toko and will be home for Christmas Day. Mr. L. F. Miller, Melbourne, chairman of directors of the Victoria Insurance Company, is visiting New Plymouth and is staying at the Criterion Hotel. He is accompanied by Mrs. Miller. The death of Judge G. Z. Woinarski, of the Victorian County Court, and formerly chief prosecutor for the Crown in the Criminal Court, is reported by cable from Melbourne. He was aged 72 years. Mr. G. H. Bell, Oakura, has returned after having spent two or three weeks in the Hawkes Bay and east coast districts in connection with Jersey classification work. Mr. G. E. Mannering, Christchurch, the noted New Zealand alpinist, has been advised that he has been elected an honorary member of the Alpine Club, London, in recognition of his services to mountaineering. He is the second New Zealand climber to be accorded this honour, which is enjoyed by only 30 alpinists in different parts of the world. Mr. Mannering was at one time a resident of New Plymouth, where he was manager of the Union Bank of Australia. The death of Mr. C. R. B. Speight occurred at Hamilton at the age of 66 years yesterday, reports the Press Association. Mr. Speight, who was born at Auckland, was a prominent Auckland footballer and toured Australia with a New Zealand representative team in 1893. He came to Hamilton soon afterwards and took a prominent part in town activities. He was a Waikato representative footballer and a selector, a borough councillor and chairman of the Hamilton East school committee for 25 years.
