CINDER TRACK RACING

HIGH STANDARD AT AUCKLAND. FIRST CONTESTS OF THE SEASON. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Cinder track racing of a high standard was witnessed by a crowd of more than 10,000 at Western Springs speedway on Saturday night, when English, American and New Zealand riders took part in the first contests of the season at Auckland. There were thrilling exhibitions of broadsiding in the international Derby, in which the New Zealand champion, A. W. Mattson, was defeated in the final by R. Harrison, who rode impressively throughout. In the semi-finals Mattson had made the most of his new motor to defeat a brilliant. English exponent, E. Langton, and Putt Mossman, the American expert, had allowed Harrison to win by thinking he had completed the course when there was still one lap to go. In a match race Mattson narrowly defeated Mossman and in a similar contest Langton won from B. Lisman, who broke a chain in the final stages. The fastest time of the night was made by Harrison, whose 57 2-5 s for three laps from a rolling start in the international Derby was an average of 19 2-5 s a lap. The winners of the match races covered four laps from a rolling start in Im 19s, an average of 19%s a lap.

Station 2YB New Plymouth will be on the air on Christmas morning from 9 a.m. until 10 a.m., when a varied programme will be presented by Aunt Betty’s “Gems.”
