FAIRNESS OF PRESS
MR. SHEAT’S APPRECIATION. IMPARTIAL REPORTS PRAISED. “In the closing stages of the campaign I would like to pay tribute to the Press of New Plymouth for the way in which it has treated all candidates throughout the campaign,” said Mr. W. A. Sheat at St. Aubyn Street hall last night. They had heard of shortcomings of the 'Press but so far as New Plymouth was concerned they were extremely fortunate to have two papers which in political contests were scrupulously fair in the publishing of reports, he continued. He had been in three election campaigns and he had no complaints so far as the reporting of meetings was concerned. Whatever were the political opinions of the papers so far as policy and merits of candidates they were fair as regards reports. His policy had been so fully published, he said, that it was hardly necessary for him to outline it once more. In future it would perhaps be possible for a candidate to put forward his policy without actually addressing a meeting.
