TENNIS AT LOWGARTH
VISIT FROM RADNOR ROAD. The Lowgarth Tennis Club’s openlrig day was held on Thursday, the day being perfect. Visitors were present from Radnor' Road and Mahoe, Sides were . chosen by Mr. Mapp (Radnor Road) and Mr. S. Alsop (Lowgarth), Mr. Mapp’s side winning by three'sets to one (19 games to 13). The results are:—Mapp and Miss B. Hunt beat S. Alsop and Miss Tobeck, 6—o; E. Adams and Miss I. Richardson beat Hunt and Miss D. Shrimpton, 6—3; J. Fletcher and Miss J. Shrimpton beat A. Jennings, and Miss A. Sulzberger, 6—4; Miss E. Ricketts and Miss G. Robertson lost to Miss B. Robertson and. Miss D. Babington, I—6. Light lunch and afternoon tea were provided by the Lowgarth members. Mr. Mapp thanked the club for an enjoyable day and extended an invitation to attend a club day at Radnor Road. Mr. Piper welcomed the visitors and thanked Mr. Mapp for the invitation. An invitation was received from the Cardiff Tennis Club to a carnival day, the carnival being held in aid of the south-west queen candidate, Miss E. Richardson. GENERAL ITEMS. Goats on Egmont. Support for the statements made several times recently concerning the scarcity of goats in the east committee’s area of - Mt. Egmont National Park is given by the experiences of the hostel caretaker, Mr. J. Carryer. When a few days ago Mr. Carryer devoted a day to a goat hunt over the area of the reserve not a sign of a goat could be found. Small “Fire in Broadway.
Quick action by workmen on the spot cheated the Stratford Firt Brigade early yesterday afternoon, when it was called out to a fire on the roof of the new building being erected in Broadway for Masters Ltd. The fire, which it is believed was started by the. heat from a blow-lamp, was extinguished before the brigade arrived. Profusion of Clematis.
A greater profusion of clematis than has been seen on Egmont for many years is reported to be flanking the road from the reserve gates to the Stratford House. In conversation with a News reporter yesterday the Stratford hostel caretaker, Mr. J. Carryer, said that there was more clematis to be seen than he could remember having noticed before.
Mr. Dickie at Mangamingi. There was a large attendance at a meeting addressed by Mr. H. G. Dickie, Patea, National Government, at Mangamingi on Thursday night. Mr. HardwickSmith, who was chairman, moved: a vote of thanks and .confidence which was seconded by Mr. E. G. Woodley and carried. Masonic Hall Euchre Party.
Prizes at the weekly euchre party held in the Masonic Hall, Stratford, on Thursday night were won as follows:—Mrs. Henderson 1, Miss Voight 2, Mrs. Sanson 3, Miss R. Voight 4, Mrs. Sheppard consolation; Mr. C. Currie 1, Mr. S. Reader 2, Mr. Madgwick 3, Mr. Jacobsen 4, Mr. Mason consolation. Travelling prizes were won by Miss Kuch, Mrs. Voight, Mrs. Cooper, Mr. Kerrnode, Mr. Hall and Mr. Doncaster. Other prizes went to Mr. Kuch and Mrs. Feek. Dancing was enjoyed to music by the Thistle orchestra, A Monte Carlo was won by Mr. Doncaster and partner. ,
