WORK ON HIGHWAYS
LARGE PROGRAMME OF BOARD. 250 MILES OF ROAD AND 200 BRIDGES By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Apart from 12,700 men on public works, over 3100 are now employed on main highways throughout New Zealand. By mid-summer this number will be increased to 4000 at least. The Highways Board has a programme for tar-sealing an additional 250 miles of highway, the replacement of 200 “pioneer” bridges with concrete structures and the making of several deviations. Since the establishment of the board over 1400 miles had been transformed into dustless highways. At the end of this financial year there will be 1670 miles or over 14 per cent, of the main highways.
