Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Lowers returned by motor during the week from a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs. E. J. Blick was a bridge hostess during the week. Mrs. C. Massey entertained a number of friends at bridge during the week.
Mrs. Pople will leave by this morning’s train for Wellington, where she will live in future.
Miss M. Porritt was hostess for ? three tables of bridge on Wednesday evening. Miss J. Morton has returned to Mangatoki after a short visit to Mrs. C. Moore. .Mrs. M. Thorpe was “at home” to a few friends on Thursday afternoon. Miss Moore, inspector of hospital, who has been spending a few days with Mrs. C. Moore, left on Friday morning on her return to Wellington. Mrs. C. K. Wilson, Dominion president of the W.D.F.U., was the guest of Mrs. W. H. H. Young during her visit to Central Taranaki. Mrs. Annis was a bridge hostess on Friday afternoon.
Mrs. C. Higgs was a bridge hostess on Wednesday evening when two tables were in play. Among those present were Mesdames C. Higgs, A. White, C. Masters, W. Liddell and H. Webber. A jolly afternoon to welcome new members was held on the Avon croquet lawns on Wednesday, afternoon. The pavilion was attractively decorated and the afternoon tea tables were arranged with bowls of pink and white azalea. The president, Mrs. Alger, welcomed the: new members, for - whom Mrs. C. Masters replied. Among those present were Mesdames Polson, Alger, R. Jenkin, C. Masters, R. Macßae, Lamplough, Rogers, W. . Harris, Allan, Hughes, W. Curd, Hedditch, Coldwell, Bulman, W. Davis, Pepperill, C. Moore, Morton, Burton, F. Stephens, Seddon, Burke and W. Ros£. The golf croquet prizes were won by Mesdames Curd and Harris. Azaleas in shades of flame and yellow and bowls of tulips and irises were colourful decorations in the drawing room of Mrs. E. H. Young on Wednesday evening when she was hostess for contract bridge, four tables being in play, Mrs. Young received her guests wearing a becoming gown of black marocain and lace with a cl.enille bridge coat. Those present were Mesdames S. Pitt, N. Green, J. Richards, J. Fredric,' A. Budge, G. Hall, Hill, P. Harrison, T. Urwin, J. Hunt, Dr. Doris Gordon, E. Rutherfurd, E. Jeffries and D. McLean, and Miss J. Hill. Members of the Anglican Guild met at the home of Mrs. E. H. Young on Wednesday afternoon to make arrangements for the forthcoming bazaar. Instrumental trios were’ played by the Misses Howard and Master Howard, songs were sung by Mrs. Young and Mrs. H. C. Johnson and pianoforte solos were played by Mrs. L. Wynyard. Mrs. Wynyard acted as accompanist. Prior to her departure for Wellington, Mrs. Pople was entertained at a delightful farewell afternoon at the home of Mrs. C. Moore. Mrs. Moore, who wore a smart frock of fawn and brown printed marocain, on behalf of those present presented Mrs. Pople with a silver sandwich tray. Mrs. Pople wore a becoming gown of pink and brown floral georgette. A short musical programme was given by Mrs. C. Masters (songs), Mrs. Moore (songs), Miss J. Morton (songs), and Mrs. Hutching and Miss Morton (duet). Mrs. Morton played the accompaniments, Competitions were won by Mrs. Morton and Miss Isabelle ■ Schwieters. The rooms were beautifully decorated with bowls of golden broom. Among those present were Mesdames Pople, Macßae, Schwieters, Whitmill, Morton, Hutchings, C. Masters, N. Ebbet, C. Kelly and Seddon, and Misses J. Morton and I. Schwieters.
Miss McDonald, who has been Mrs. N. Douglas’ guest, returned to Hawera on Thursday. . Misses R. Lacy and R. Childs, who have been spending their holidays at Wellington, returned on Wednesday night.
Mrs. W. Farquarson was “at home” on Thursday and Friday afternoons.. Mrs. L. Jardine was a bridge hostess on Friday afternoon, her guests being Mesdames G. Hall, L. Furrje, D. Steven, Spence, D. McLean, E. Jeffries and J. Cresswell.
On Wednesday evening Miss M. Porritt entertained a number of friends at contract bridge, her guests being Mesdapies H. Graham, N. Douglas, W. Farquarson and L. Perkins,' and Misses Z. Masters, M. Whittle, N. Spence, Purchase, M. Curd and M. Malone.
