POPULATION GROWS
FIGURES FOR NEW ZEALAND. 3183 INCREASE IN QUARTER. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. A Gazette issued to-night shows that the population of New Zealand proper (including Maoris) at September 30 last was 1,562,129, of whom 795,847 were males and 766,282 females. Excluding Maoris the population was 1,486,705, comprising 756,527 males and 730,178 females. Maoris numbered 75,424, of whom 39,320 were males and 36,104 females.
The population of the North Island was 1,012,221 including Maoris and 940,018 excluding Maoris. The population of the South Island was 549,908 including Maoris and 546,687 excluding Maoris. During the quarter ended September 30 -the population of New Zealand proper showed an increase of 3183 compared with an increase of 2824 for the corresponding quarter of 1934. The population of Cook Islands, Niue, etc., ’at March 31 was 16,203, of Tokelau Islands at August 1 1198 and of the mandated territory of Western Samoa at June 30 53,790.
