PROOF OF POISONING
EXAMINATION OF CALIENTE. HORSE APPARENTLY RECOVERED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Definite proof has been established that the racehorse Caliente, which was suspected of having received “dope,” was poisoned. Analysis of samples of saliva taken yesterday show that the poison was mercuric chloride, a white powder which could have been put in the horse’s feed.
The mare was in bright order this morning and had apparently fully recovered. She was galloped five furlongs. It is not yet certain whether her engagement in the New Zealand Cup will be cancelled. She will be given easy work to-morrow and the decision will then be made.
