EGMONT ELECTORATE
LABOUR PARTY’S CHOICE MR. JAMES ROSS, OF AUCKLAND. TO OPPOSE MR. C. AV WILKINSON. NO OTHER PARTY IN FIELD YET. Mr. James Ross, builder, Mt. Eden, Auckland, has been selected by. the Labour Party to contest the Egmont seat at the general election against Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, the sitting member, who is an Independent. So far there has been no indication of any other candidate. It was expected that the Labour Party would shortly announce the name of a candidate and the selection, which was announced yesterday afternoon, was made after consultation with the executive at Wellington. The secretary of the Eltham branch, Mr. H. J. Drabble, stated that the party was convinced that Mr. Ross was a candidate of the right calibre, well versed in New Zealand politics and possessed of good platform ability. His name was on the list of persons approved as .being eligible to stand for Parliament in the interests of the Labour Party. It was the hope of the party that Mr. 1. J. Bridger, Mayor of Eltham, would consent to stand in the Labour interest but, while in sympathy with the aims of the party, he was unable for health reasons to accede to the request.
Mr. has stated if elected he will will immediately take up residence in the district. He is expected to arrive on Saturday to commence his campaign.
