POPULARITY OF EGMONT
MANY HOLIDAY VISITORS SEVERAL WELLINGTON PARTIES. ACTIVITY AT MOUNTAIN RESORTS. ASCENTS UNDER DIFFICULTIES. Many people including visitors from Wanganui and Wellington are spending the Labour week-end at the Egmont National Park tourist resorts. Beautiful conditions were experienced yesterday. Nine Taranaki Alpine Club members arrived at the North Egmont hostel on Saturday afternoon and proceeded to Tahurangi Hut, where they are making their headquarters until this afternoon. Five members are staying at the hostel and climb to the hut each day. An ascent to the summit was made by Misses M. Jasper and C. Hardy in four hours. A difficult climb was experienced, the snow being very soft. The accommodation at the hostel at Dawson Falls was fully taxed at the week-end and there was a large number of people at the 1 cottages and Robson Lodge. High winds were experienced on the upper slopes yesterday when Messrs. C. Dingle and D. Lee climbed to Syme Hut. They made the return journey by the Kapuni Gorge. Members of the Orangi Ski Club, Wellington, who are spending the week-end at Dawson Falls, tramped to the Stratford ski grounds. A small party visited Fantham’s Peak on Saturday A dance was held at Robson Lodge on Saturday and Mr. Smith nd Misses M. Hayton and J. Smith, Taranaki Alpine Club members who are staying at Tahurangi Hut, tramped over in the darkness to attend. On Sunday Taranaki Alpine Club members under the leadership of Mr. R. Whitwell tramped from Tahurangi Hut to Dawson Falls, via the East ridge, and back.
Six members of the Tararua Tramping Club are 1 camping at the Stratford mountain house, while five members of the Hutt Valley Tramping Club and a party of four Wellington trampers are established at the camp house. Two of the Wellington party made a good ascent under difficult soft snow circumstances. They climbed via the Policeman, then working to the north, and reached the top by the usual route. Twelve members of the Stratford Ski Club and visiting trampers visited the skiing grounds yesterday. A.. Thomas, leader of the Hutt party, which visited Dawson Falls on Saturday, gained a firstclass ticket for ski running.
