A DOLL’S DRESS. This week's special request lesson is given for two girls who want to make new dresses for their dolls. The little frock can be made in flowered material, or in plain cotton with a touch or two of simple embroidery at the neck. It is cut in one piece and has tiny puffed sleeves. To draw out the pattern, take a piece of paper, six and a half inches wide and nine inches long, and copy the measurements shown in the diagram. There are rather a lot of figures, but they will make your task

much easier. Cut out the pattern. Now take a piece of material, 13 inches wide and 18 inches long, fold it widthways and lengthways, place the pattern on top, with the straight edge against the vertical side fold, pin it down and cut the material. To get the sleeve-pattern, take a piece of paper six and a half inches wide and three inches deep, and copy the lower diagram on to it. Fold lengthways a piece of material six and a half inches wide and six inches deep, lay the pattern on it and cut out. To make up, join the shoulder and side seams, and bind the hem. Make a short cut down the centre-back of the bodice and face the edges neatly. Bind the neck to match the hem, and sew press-studs on either side of the backopening. Cut out two little pockets, bind the top edge of each, turn in the other edges, and sew one on either side of the skirt. Sew up the sleeve-seams, run gathering threads round the tops and pull up to fit the armholes. Tack them in place, regulating the gathers as you go and keeping most of the fullness on the shoulders, then sew in neatly and whip over the inner raw edges. Hem the sleeve edges and thread a length of thin elastic through each casing to fit the doll’s arm. Cut two-inch wide strips from the rest of the material left over, sew them together to make a length of 18 inches and join the long edges.
