RACING AT MARTON

NOW THREE YEARS OLD REFRESHER IN GOOD FORM HORSES FOR WANGANUI

(By

"Hurry On.”)

Th-dugh his reputation was somewhat dimmed by his defeat by Kinnoul at Riccarton at Easter, Heritage was a high class ' two-year-old and one that was not over-raced. He did not commence racing until January at Trentham. Since his trainer F. Davis moved his team to Wanganui Heritage has been responsible for several attractive gallops and on Tuesday reeled off live furlongs in great style with Midian in Ini 3s, the best of the morning. As Alchemic and Tonnerre demonstrated at New Plymouth last week three-year-olds are dangerous at this period of the year and, if Heritage is a good three-year-old h e should prove capable of running prominently in the Railway Handicap at Marton to-morrow under his handy impost of 7.12. Heritage is beautifully bred, being by Posterity from Homage, the dam of Honour, Episode and Worship. This is one of the best families in Mr. Currie’s stud as Homage was by Absurd from Eulogy. BREEDING OF DEVASTATE FIRST OF PHILAMORS Devastate, who filled second place at the Epsom meeting (Victoria) on Saturday, is a three-year-old colt by Philamor from Rapine’s half-sister Rapina. He was bred by the late Mr. H. M. Reeves, and the Melbourne owner, Mr. Eric Connolly, purchased him as a yearling for 180 guineas. This was his second start and he seems to have registered a good performance, as'he is reported to have met bad luck on the journey. Devastate is the first of the progeny of Philamor to race, and he is likely to do good service for this well-bred young sire. As evidence that he is held in high regard, it is worth recalling that his owner, one of the most astute I‘acing men in Australia, purchased his younger brother privately before the last Trantham sales. NOTED TRAINER’S DEATH ADAM SKIRVING’S CAREER The death of the well-known trainer, Adam Skirving, is announced from Melbourne. While on the way to the Moonee Valley racecourse a fortnight ago to school a horse ovet the steeplechase fences, he collapsed near the entrance to the course. He was driving a motor-car, but Mrs. Skirving, who was with him at the time, was able to stop the car. He was taken to Hamilton Russell House at the Alfred Hospital. When first connected with racing, Adam Skirving, who was a New Zealander, was attached to E. Cutts’ stable, but he removed to Melbourne, where for the last 30 years he has acted as private trainer to a Melbourne doctor who raced under the assumed name of S. A. Rawdon. He had charge of a large breeding and training establishment at Dandenong, where he turned out many good winners, including Blague (Newmarket Handicap). Broadsword, chased from the’late Sir George Clifford (Doncaster Handicap and Adelaide Birthday Cup) and Waterline, another New Zealander, who brought about the defeat of Phar Lap in the C. M. Lloyd Stakes. */"' * *. ; ' . A MARE’S ADVENTURES LOST AND FOUND The brood mare Lomint, by Catmint from Loloma, owned by Mr. B. Goldwater, of Devonport, who bred her, disappeared from the Mardella Stud at Otahuhu during last week-end, but she was found in a road in the Mount Roskill district on Monday morning. Lomint seemed quite all right when recovered. Lomint was sent to the stud last Thursday and was put in a paddock with four other horses near the farmhouse in Otara Road. On visiting the paddock at 6.30 on Sunday morning, Miss N. Ed-, wards, owner of the stud, found that the mare was missing, though the gate was still fastened with a chain and hook. She examined the paddock and found hoof-prints in a corner, which suggested that the horses had been rounded up, and other prints leading from the paddock through the gateway on- to the. road. About a quarter* of a mile along Otara Road she found a feed-foag that she thought had been used to catch Lomint. Miss Edwards is still definitely of the opinion that the mare was taken out of the paddock. Lomint, who is valued at £5OO, was a good performer in her day, winning among other races, the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie in 1927. She has had only one foal—Valmint, who ran third in the Sylvia Park Handicap at the recent Pakurangi Hunt meeting at Ellerslie. GRATEFUL RESUMES ONE OF DULIEU’S TEAM The New Plymouth trainer H. Dulieu had his team strengthened last week by the addition of the three-year-old Grateful and a two-year-old Tea Tray gelding. Grateful, who is owned by Mr. H. Hartigan, Tarata, is by Raceful from Embralto. He showed promise last season when he ran- prominently on two or three occasions. The Tea Tray gelding is owned by Mr. A. Rowan, Tc Awamutu, who won the Urenui Hack on Saturday with that promising three-year-old Tonnerre. FOxXTON NOMINATIONS The meetings of the Foxton Racing Club are always popular with Taranaki owners and trainers and tire spring gathering, for which nominations, close tonight at 9 o’clock with the secretary, Mr. J. Newton, is likely to draw a good response from this province. A special attraction is the Caimavon Gold Cup event in which, in addition to the stake of £125, a handsome gold cup of the value of £5O goes to the owner of the . winning horse. The trainer and the jockey are also not forgotten, me former receiving a stop watch and the latter a gold-mounted whip. The Foxton course, being on sandy country, is always in splendid order at this period of the year.
