CALF COLLECTING

CRITICISM OF OVERLAPPING. MEETING OF FARMERS’ UNION. No practical suggestions were made by the special committee set up by the South Taranaki Farmers’. Union executive to deal with overlapping in the collection of bobby calves. The appointment of the committee arose from a protest made at the last meeting by the Kaponga branch regarding alleged wastage due to overlapping. A meeting was held at Elthain and, though suggestions were made, it was felt that nothing definite could be done this season. It was decided to recommend to the executive that a joint conference be/arranged with the Nort Taranaki executive with a view to bringing the matter before the appropriate authorities for action next season. At yesterday’s meeting of the South Taranaki executive at Hawera the secretary, Mr. E. K. Cameron, stated that, pursuant to a resolution of the committee, ’ he had waited on the Transport Licensing Authority at Hawera recently, and the chairman, Mr. P. Thomson, had been pleased to accept from the executive a letter setting out the position and incorporating several points raised by the committee. • The points were that the committee realised that something in the nature of zoning system was desirable to eliminate road usage, but that such a system of zoning would create - monopoly oyer specific areas for the meat companies, with the consequent danger of a reduced price being paid; and that a monopoly given to the carriers might lead to cartage costs being raised. The North Taranaki executive had not advocated zoning, but had referred the matter to the Dominion executive, said Mr. H. E. Blyde. He thought that a way could be devised whereby they could retain the competition between the meat companies and yet eliminate or greatly minimise the overlapping. He agreed that some action should be taken before next season, and suggested that the question could well be considered by the joint committee to be set up of representatives of both executives. The committee set up to consider organisation and other matters in conjunction with North Taranaki consisted of Messrs. W. A. Sheat (president), E. K. Cameron (secretary), A. B. Muggeridge, D. Johnson and H. J. Finlay. The secretary reported that the badge of the Dominion life member for presentation to Mr. E. J. Betts had been received and it was hoped to obtain shortly badges for presentation to executive life' members. All the badges would be presented at a social gathering at a later date. An outline of the business transacted at the last Dominion executive meeting was given by Mr. H. E. Blyde, who was thanked for the information.

Mr. Blyde thanked the executive for appointing him its representative in conjunction with the North Taranaki executive. He would keep them in close touch with Dominion executive matters and would be pleased to watch their interests. SPRING BULB SHOW. METHODIST EFFORT AT PATEA.
