Some criticism of the rate of interest at which money would be obtained through the Mortgage Corporation was expressed by several speakers at yesterday’s meeting of the South. Taranaki executive of the Farmers’ Union, After a short discussion a resolution was passed protesting against the failure of the Government to make money available through the Mortgage Corporation at as low a rate as recommended by the Dairy Commission. The motion was moved by Mr. A. B. Muggeridge, who claimed that the prob* lem.was not being met by the Government. in a way which would assist those mostly in need of assistance. He was at a loss to -understand why there was such a difference between the rate recommended by the Dairy Commission and the rate named by the Mortgage Corporation. He claimed that the farmers’ position was becoming worse and that the recent Government action would do nothing to improve it. “My opinion is that the corporation is not going to be of any use to the man ‘up against things’,” said the president, Mr. W. A. Sheat. Only those in good positions would be able to get the money, he claimed, and that was not the object for which the corporation was supposed to have been set up. Although he considered that the corporation would not give the assistance that it was expected to give, Mr. H. E. Blyde, present as Taranaki representative on the Dominion executive, considered that it would give assistance to many farmers. It had to be remembered that the money had to be obtained from the investing public. GENERAL ITEMS. Okalawa Territorial Parade.
