RANEURLY SHIELD GAME

CANTERBURY TO DECIDE WHICH OF FOUR CHALLENGES? TARANAKI UNION’S APPLICATION, DATE ACCEPTABLE TO PROVINCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Tire New Zealand Rugby Union tonight refused to adjudicate which of Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Ashburton should have the right to meet Canterbury for the Ranfurly Shield on September 28 on the ground? that it could only exercise its powers when there was a dispute between the holder and challenger and no evidence was before the committee of such a dispute, The Taranaki union, however, advised that it had entered a challenge and was prepared to play on any date after September 18. It was decided to advise Taranaki that Canterbury had indicated that September 28 was the only available date and to ask if this date was suitable., Taranaki members being under the impression that Taranaki was due to meet Auckland on that day. Mr, E. McKenzie, Wairarapa, was appointed sole selector for the North Island team to play South Island at Wellington on October 5, it being considered unnecessary to replace Mr. V, R. Meredith, Auckland, for the remainder of the season. Messrs. A. A. Adams, West Coast, and W. Pearson, Otago, will pick the South Island team. It was decided to secure the report of the chairman of the selection committee on his ideas of the best means of picking teams in futiire. It was announced that the All Black* would play two, possibly three gamas, in British Columbia on their way back from Great Britain. TARANAKI'S CLEAR DATE. ■ CHALLENGE MAY BE ACCEPTED, (By “Sid© Row.") The position now i© that the onus of deciding which of th© four- challengers is to have the only remaining data rests once more with th© Canterbury union. The New Zealand union has shown, however, that provided the province is fre© to play on September 28, it considers Taranaki’s challenge an acceptable one.

In the provisional list of interprovincial fixtures drawn by th© New Zealand union at the beginning of the season Taranaki was set down to play Auckland at New Plymouth on September 28. Owing to representations by the Auckland union, however, the match was played on July 27, a fact of which the New Zealand union does not seem to b© aware. Canterbury has already indicated its willingness to grant Taranaki a Ranfuriy Shield match,
