MATIERE FOOTBALL
MONSOOR CUP RETAINED.
DEFEAT OF OHURA TEAM.
On Saturday the Ohura junior football team visited Matiere and played a challenge match for the Monsoor Cup, which Matiere retained, winning by 17 points to nil.
The teams were:— Ohura: N. Jones, Rix, B. Gill, Crosby, Wakeford, V. Dons, Woods, Box, Esdaile, Kennedy, Aitchisbn, Towler, Borthwick. Matiere: Binns, J. Marshall, C. Stewart, G. Crozier, W. Baker, A. Margan, H. Fauchelle, J. Owens, H. Geisler, M. Rawson, Carran, R. Carter, Harvey, A. Stewart, R. Bell. . For 90 per cent, of the game Matiere had Ohura penned in its own twentyfive and only on two or three short-lived occasions did play go into Matiere territory. From a loose forward rush R. Carter scored a try and soon after kicked an easy penalty goal, for Matiere to lead 6-0 at half-time. Another penalty goal by R. Carter was followed by a great score by H. Geisler. From a scrum in his own half he came through ball at toe to dribble it with good control 60 yards and score between the post for Carter to convert. From a back attack C. Stewart scored in the corner to bring the score up to 17-0. The Matiere team played one of its best games for the season. H. Geisler was the outstanding forward on the field making some great breaks and showing complete control of the ball, while Carran and R. Carter were also in great form for Matiere but the whole pack played very well. H. Fauchelle was the best of the Matiere backs, his rush stopping, handling and passing being well executed, with W. Baker and G. Crozier the best of the rest. The Ohura pack, playing one man short, had a strenuous day trying to stop the heavier Matiere pack. Wakeford played well for Ohura, in the backs, with Rix and Crosby also doing good work. Receiving nothing of the ball from the scrum, the Ohura backs had little or no opportunity to show their work on attack. Mr. C. Burton was referee.
