FLYING BOATS USE
IMPERIAL AIRWAYS’ PLANS. CONSTRUCTION COMMENCED. (British Official Wireless). Rec. 5.5 p.m. Rugby, Sept. 2. Considerable extension of the use of flying boats on Empire routes is foreshadowed in the announcement that Imperial Airways has brought to England one of the Short Calcutta three-engined flying boats for use in training pilots In the handling and navigation of marine aircraft.
New, large flying boats are being built for Imperial Airways by Messrs. Short Bros. One is a four-engined craft of 3000 horse-power capable of carrying 24 passengers and mails with a top speed of about 180 miles an hour.
