WOMEN’S GAMES AT GISBORNE. NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. The women’s-hockey championship was continued to-day. The weather was wet in the morning but somewhat cleared when play commenced in the afternoon, though light showers fell in the early stages of the first game. An even game was witnessed between Bush and Marlborough, the score 3-aIJ being a good indication of the game. Bush showed improved form, playing very vigorously against more experienced opponents whose combination is still not up to the standard anticipated. Scorers for Marlborough were Woolley and Drake (2) and for Bush Cavanagh (2) and Bailey. Southland beat Poverty Bay A by two goals to nil. The winning team had the better combination and more experience and more pace than the home team. Dogged determination, however, to some extent offset those disadvantages. Scorers for Southland were Rewcastle and McIntyre. On a ground practically water-logged at one end and very sodden at the other Auckland beat Canterbury by two goals to nil. The greater part of play was in Auckland territory but Canterbury could not score, the circle work being far from good. Auckland was good on defence and adopted the right tactics on heavy ground in lifting the ball whereas Canterbury tried to drive through. Waters and Lowe scored for Auckland. South Otago drew with Akitio after a very even match though the southerners had a territorial advantage. The game was played on a water-logged ground which made accurate scoring difficult. The score was 1-all. Litticrap scored for South Otago. Akitio’s score came when M. Reid hit the ball into the circle and the South Otago goalie came out and accidentally kicked the ball in. Wellington completely outclassed Poverty Bay B in every department,, being too fast, more experienced and with better positional play, the game ending in Wellington winning by eight goals to two. Scorers for Wellington were Dunce (31, Wilkins (3), Charles and McLelland. For Poverty Bay Sangwell and Porter scored. Ashburton was superior to Wairarapa with greater combination and better stick work. But for the defence of the Wairarapa goalie the score would have been greater. Ashburton won by three goals (G. F. Donaldson, Lowe and Davison) to two (Dawber and Jackson). To-morrow’s games are: A section: Bush v. Poverty Bay A, Canterbury v. Marlborough, Eastern v. Southland, Auckland a bye. B section: Akitio v. Wairarapa, Wellington v. South Otago, Ruahine v. Ashburton, Poverty Bay B a bye. B section: Ashburton 6, South Otago 5, Ruahine 4, Wellington 4, Akitio 3, Poverty Bay B 2, Wairarapa 0.
