VIOLENT METHODS
OBJECTIONS BY SWEDEN “REVOLTS INSTINCTIVELY” WILL STAND BY LEAGUE PREVENTION OF FIGHTING By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. London, Sept. 2. “Abyssinia is not a virginal colonial territory and Sweden therefore does not countenance violent Italian methods, and revolts instinctively when a . primitive country with scant resources is accused of menacing a great Power’s security,” declared the Swedish Foreign Minister, Dr. R. J. Sandler. “Sweden accepts the obligations of the League. Peace-lovers insist not on neutrality but on the prevention of war by common effort and the stopping of hostilities if they commence.” A Paris message says that M. Laval French Premier, and M. Stoyadinovitch, Prime Minister of Yugoslavia, discussed the Little Entente’s attitude regarding the Abyssinia dispute. It is understood that while the Little Entente is anxious that the League Covenant should be upheld, it fears the shock that would follow Italian withdrawal from the League. Romain Rolland, the French novelist and pacifist, has sent a letter to the Congress of Friends of the Ethiopian People, opening at Paris to-morrow, stating: “The abominable attempt against Abyssinia reveals the enormous and imbecile appetite for glory of a single individual playing the part of Caesar. Not thinking of the blood of his own people or of others, he has eyes only for a sinister statue erected on the ruins of Italy and possibly Europe. It is our duty to make the Government act.”
