Mr. W. S. Cox has been appointed secretary of the Moonee Valley Racing Club in succession to the late Mr. A. V. Hiskens, states a Melbourne cable. The elevation of Mr. R. G. Nixon, manager of the company, and V. Elliott, secretary, left yesterday morning for Wellington. They will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Cool Stores Association. The death occurred at Whangarei on Monday of Mr. James Archer, who for nine years was Whangarei borough engineer. He was born at Rookby Manor, Yorkshire, and was engaged in civil engineering until he enlisted as a sergeant? major in the South African War, in tire course of which he was wounded and invalided home. He came to New Zealand 30 years ago and was appointed gineering until he enlisted as a sergeantDunedin. Later he was successively en- a gaged as a civil engineer at Napier and Masterton, and later became chief works overseer for the - Auckland City Council. In. 1924 he was appointed foreman to the Whangarei Borough Council, and in 1926 was appointed borough engineer, which position he held until his illness. He was keenly interested in fire brigade wbrk and was an active member of the Empire Ex-Servicemen’s Association. He leaves a widow, a son and a daughter.
