PUBLICANS’ GOLF EVENT ——— ' M. DUNCAN WINS WHOLESALERS. END OF SUCCESSFUL FIXTURE. The North Island Licensed Victuallers’ Golf Association’s annual tournament was brought to a successful conclusion at the New Plymouth Clubs links yesterday. The southerly wind had abated and the weather conditions were principal event, the retailers championship, was won by E. Manley, Wanganui, who defeated A. O.- Casey, Eltham, in the final after a well contested game in which the standard of golf ■was always good. The wholesalers’ championship ■ fell to another Wanganui player in M. H. Duncah, staged a strong finish to account for T. E. James, Wellington, in the final. " Intoe final of the “cobbers ’ event J. H. Boon produced some fine golf to score a somewhat decisive G. M. In toe final of toe retailers’ championship Casey opened well by taking toe first hole from T. Manley, but Manley then found his game and proceeded to collect toe next four in a row. Casey rallied and by winning the 7th and 9th had reduced toe margin to one. Casey looked likely to square toe game at toe long 10th, but toe unexpected happened. Manley staged a wonderful recovery from toe old creek bed and holed a 12 feet putt for a win when Casey required three putts. He increased this lead to three with a fine par four at toe Hth. Both were on toe hillside at the short 12th, but Manley with a beautiful chip collected his three for another win. . A . Four down with only six ,to play, Casey’s position looked desperate, but he fought back in good- style. A perfect three saw him win Moses, and he was a little unlucky at toe next, where his putt refused to drop. Manley was then dormy, but a grand four saw Casey win toe 16th. The end came at the next, where Casey was badly astray with, his second and Manley,. making no errors, secured the bogey four which gave him the hole and toe game 3 up and 1 to play- ' ■ In the wholesalers’ final Duncan commenced by taking toe first hole from Jaines with a birdie three, but James matched his two par fours at the next two holes. Duncan took toe fourth, but jameg with wins at the 6th and 7th, where Duncan put two out of bounds. James threw the Bth away by taking four putts, but Duncan returned the compliment by doing likewise at toe 9th, and they turned all square. . • Both were on the long 10th in threes, but Duncan failed to get down in two putts and James was 1 up. The 11th was halved in par fours, but Jameswas very weak round toe green at toe ,12th and Duncan won the hole with a four, ‘after skying his tee shot badly. James then struck a bad putting patch and Duncan took the next three holes to become dormy. He ended toe game at the next, where he placed a grand second two yards from toe flag and ran the putt down for a birdie three.
