A feature of the first day was the Bendix trophy race from California, won by Mr. Benjamin Howard, a Chicago flyer, in an aeroplane of his own design. The time for 2042 miles was 8 hours 163.1 seconds, which is only 23J seconds slower than that of Captain Roscoe Turner, last year’s winner. Mrs. Amelia Earhart-Putnam with several others finished the course. There was one accident Mr. Cecil Alien, who in 1931 attempted a non-stop flight from Japan to America, , was killed instantly in a freak aeroplane of his own design three miles from toe start at Burbank airport. The race awards totalled £2OOO, of which £9OO goes to Mr. Howard subject to toe time being'confirmed.
