FUN IN FANCY DRESS
WHEELBARROW DERBY AT PATEA. Late night crowds at Patea on Saturday night were entertained with a wheelbarrow Derby by a group of enthusiasts in fancy dress, in a fund-raising effort for the Patea Municipal Band and the athletic club. The competitors paraded through the main street to martial music by the band, the Derby commencing at the Bedford Street corner and finishing at the Turi memorial. The Patea Wrestling Club's entry, Messrs. S. Goodwin and Smith, was an easy first. Messrs. R. Adams and T. Burgess, representing the surf and life saving club, came in with a fanfare of trumpets, a good second. Other entries were the Patea Amateur Athletic Club (Messrs. D. Lamb and G. Fraser), Carlyle Golf. Club (Masters C. and B. Roots), Band (Messrs. Hayward and Smith), Laurel Lodge (Messrs. W. Ray and C. Aiken). Miniature golden wheelbarrows were presented to the winners and shaving outfits to the team securing the largest amount for the funds.
