FOURTEEN MEN WIN

HAWERA’S GOOD DISPLAY CLIFTON PLAYS LIFELESS GAME. DYMOND AND BROWN CLEVER. Taking the field with only 14 men, including two third grade players, Hawera pleyed excellent football at Waitara to beat a Clifton team nearly at full strength by the convincing margin of 13 (three tries, two converted) to nil. Following the first shock attack of the Clifton forwards Hawera settled down to play orthodox Rugby and matched Clifton at its own game in loose rucking. The Clifton forwards produced some splendid rushes throughout the match, from many of which a tiy was prevented by sheer bad luck. As the game went on, however, Hawera’s seven men, with only one regular front row player, held Clifton for weight and beat Fowler snd Armstrong for the ball. The Clifton back line was thrown out of joint because Fenton, the usual half, was absent owing to his fingers having been crushed at work. Stockman, who substituted, seemed out of place and could neither get the ball away nor stop the Hawera forwards. On the other hand, Guy did everything a good half should have done and Dymond and Dowdle handled a greasy belli brilliantly. Dymond was at the top of his form and varied his play splendidly. The Hawera five-eighths played true back football, running diagonally to give the ball to N. Hunter as he flashed through straight down-field. Hunter, however, though reliable on defence and splendid at being where he was wanted, has not yet found his attacking powers and the movements often broke down, Dymond and O. Brown worked in harmony and their play together was a treat to watch. Brown also helped considerably in the front row. . . Simmonsen had most work to do for the Clifton backs apart from Collins, but there were far too many dropped passes on attack. Longstaff (Clifton) and Archer and Butchart (Hawera) worked hardest in the scrums. ... The teams were:—

Clifton: Collins; Puke, Wilson, Jones; Simmonsen, Edwin; Stockman; Cole; Olsson, Major, Arms, Tate; Armstrong, Fowler, Longstaff. Hawera: Gooc /in; J. Hunter, N. Hunter, Hayman; Dowdle, Dymond; Guy; Holloway, Archer, Thomas, Garvey; O. Brown, Butchart, Lee. A break by Dymond and then a solo run by Brown took play to Clifton’s line. Both Simmonsen. and'Collins attempted drop-kicks that failed and three times the Clifton forwards could not reach the line in passing rashes begun by Fowler. Hard rucking play in midfield broke up when Dymond caught Edwin when he was trying to pick the ball up and robbed him of it. Brown was alongside when Collins intervened, and neither Simmonsen nor Puke could catch the representative forward. N. Hunter goaled as half-time arrived. Twice the Clifton forwards almost crossed. Collins narrowly missed a' penalty. Dowdle short-punted and the ball bounced very badly for Collins, who carried back. Cole cleared to half-way and Clifton gained an advantage by concentrating on the Hawera full-back. Hawera’s second try was the result of a splendid piece of combined play. Dymono wheeled round with the defence chasing across field and cut through to the other wing to connect with J. Hunter. The winger drew Collins, Brown switched across on the outside and was deadly away for a try. Hunter missed the conversion.

The Hawera forwards placed their team on the attack and Clifton was hard put to stop Archer. Eventually Guy shot out a splendid pass to Dymond and the fiveeighth wriggled through in first-cltes style. Brown converted.. Clifton made an effort in the dying stages of the game, but the whistle for time blew as Goodwin forced. Hawera 18 Clifton 0 Mr. N. Frost was the referee.
