HAWERA’S WIN

CLIFTON BEATEN EASILY SENIOR RUGBY MATCHES ONLY FOUR GAMES PLAYED ONE MATCH POSTPONED Hawera’s defeat of Clifton, which has been beaten only once previously this season, was the surprise of the Taranaki senior Rugby competitions On Saturday. The result was all the more unexpected because Hawera had only 14 men, including two third grade players. Star beat Tukapa fairly in a match that was not so bright as was expected, and Opunake beat Waimate B—o. The match between the two Old Boys teams resulted in New Plymouth beating Stratford by 19 to 11. No other senior matches were played, Kaponga defaulting to Okaiawa and A th-; letic defaulting to Eltham. Two members of the Athletic team played for Hawera. Owing to the Patea ground being under water the match between Patea and Inglewood was postponed. Results were:— Senior Games. Hawera 13 v. Clifton 0. Opunake 8 V. Waimate 0. Star 8 v. Tukapa 6. New Plymouth Old Boys 19 V. Stratford Old Boys 11. First Junior Semi-final. New Plymouth Old Boys 12 v. Okato 3. • There are now only five matches unpiayed in the senior competition, the Kaponga-Athletic game postponed from earlier in the season, the Patea-Ingle-wood match postponed on Saturday, and the three matches not played the previous week—lnglewood V. New Plymouth Old Boys, Stratford v. Waimate and Clifton v. Okaiawa. Opunake has gone to second place on Saturday’s results, but Clifton, by winning the Okaiawa game, can draw level with Opunake.
